The valley is sealed off from the Cascade Range for the northeast and with the Klamath Mountains into the northwest. While in the much north the terrain is rugged and intensely forested, getting wetter about the coastal facet and drier and barren in the higher northeast. In the south the Central Valley is shut off because of the transverse ranges,
